Topics to be covered

Inhaler Devices – Common User Errors
A/Prof Gregory Katsoulotos

Inhaler devices and their correct usage are fundamental to the optimal management of both COPD and asthma. In this very practical talk, Associate Professor Greg Katsoulotos will discuss his approach to selecting the most appropriate device for a particular patient, out of the plethora of devices currently available, and the various patient and device factors that need to be considered when making this selection. He will also discuss common user errors associated with these inhalers including technique errors, and issues that lead to poor treatment adherence - a common challenge in chronic respiratory disease.

Holter Monitoring in GP – Cases and Practical Tips
Prof Rukshen Weerasooriya

With palpitations being one of the most common presentations in primary care, holter monitoring is increasingly important in contemporary general practice. In this very practical talk, electrophysiologist Professor Rukshen Weerasooriya will discuss the logistics of modern-day Holter monitoring - its role in this era of wearables, who is eligible for a rebateable-Holter, how to optimise the yield from testing and, importantly the likelihood of 'red flags' being detected on Holter testing and importance of timely action when this occurs.

Non-Hormonal Options for Menopausal Symptoms
Dr Jane Elliott AM & Prof Rod Baber AM

Distressing hot flushes and night sweats are the most common reason menopausal women seek medical help. And while hormonal therapy is the gold standard in terms of effective treatment, not all women can or want to take MHT. In this talk, GP Dr Jane Elliott and menopause expert, Professor Rod Baber will discuss the latest management of these vasomotor symptoms of menopause focussing on non-hormonal treatments including the recently TGA-approved, selective neurokinin 3 receptor antagonist, fezolinetant.

Management of Constipation in Children
Dr Rupert Hinds

Managing constipation in young children is almost always more about listening and education than investigation and pathology. So says paediatric gastroenterologist, Dr Rupert Hinds who, in this talk will discuss the key features of this very common condition, and how it is best managed in the majority of cases. He will also outline the few red flags in the history or the presentation that suggest further investigation is warranted - a rare occurrence but a possibility that often drives unnecessary testing.
